Vignelli's Verbal Vignettes

The Vignelli Canon is a ninety-six page book written by Massimo Vignelli that serves as a useful instrument for a better understanding of typography in Graphic Design. It's available as a free PDF.The book is divided into two major sections: The Intangibles and The Tangibles. Part one (Intangibles) is less about typography specifics and more about Vignelli's encompassing design theory and disciplined process. I'm halfway through the book (it's a quick read) and am enjoying it so much that I felt compelled to share some quotes.

It's one of those books where it seems every word has been expertly chosen and thought about, a distillation from content that could fill a book ten times as large. What's left is the concentrated essence of thoughtful, experienced advice from a mature designer to those who are eager to learn.

Without further ado, the quotes.

The Vignelli Canon

"Creativity needs the support of knowledge to be able to perform at its best." p.6

"Semantics, in design, means to understand the subject in all its aspects; to relate the subject to the sender and the receiver in such a way that it makes sense to both. It means to design something that has a meaning, that is not arbitrary, that has a reason for being, something in which every detail carries the meaning or has a precise purpose aimed at a precise target. How often we see design that has no meaning: stripes and swash of color splashed across pages for no reason whatsoever." p.11

"Whatever we do, if not understood, fails to communicate and is wasted effort." p.14

"Design discipline is above and beyond any style." p.22

"We detest the demand of temporary solutions, the waste of energies and capital for the sake of novelty." p.28

"We like economy of design because it avoids wasteful exercises, it respects investment and lasts longer." p.28

"There are no hierarchies when it comes to quality. Quality is there or is not there, and if is not there we have lost our time." p.16
